Israelite House of David - Little Time To Care For Their Beards
On the 7th of January, 1920, Bennie Hill wrote to Mary and Benjamin from Chicago to report the band was giving three performances a night to standing room only crowds. As the capacity of the theater was 3500 the band was playing to over 10,000 people a night.
Life on the road for the House of David bands was not easy. While they often would play one theater for a week or more sometimes they would play just one or two performances and be back on the road again with little time to care for their woolen uniforms, instruments, long hair or beards. Often they got little sleep and it was always a struggle to procure proper lodgings and vegetarian food.
