Israelite House of David - 1908 Railroad Trestle
|
With all the colonists had to do to open the Eden Springs Park in 1908 they found time to construct a high railroad trestle over the creek valley in the center of the park. This trestle was at the west end of the valley and is shown in the earliest pictures of the park. It is not clear today how this trestle was used before the east trestle was built a short time later. Trains may have run forward over the trestle in one direction and in reverse over it in the other direction. Another possibility is that the train looped on each side of the trestle. The west trestle ran just to the west of a pond made by impounding the creek that ran through the Eden Springs Valley. In the foreground are buildings that were used as changing rooms for swimming. The train in this image is heading south from the north depot to the south depot. This was most common direction of travel during the history of the railroad. In later years park visitors could see trains pass on this trestle behind the beer garden stage while watching shows at the park. The Eden Springs creek ran from the pond, over a spillway, under this trestle and out of the park.
